Home favourites Cuttack-A regained the Kalahandi Cup when they trounced Rourkela by an innings and 76 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day final match of the Senior Inter-District Cricket Tournament at Sunshine Ground here today. Cuttack-A had last won the prestigious trophy in 2014. Top- order batsman Aravind Singh and young off-spinner Subham Nayak put up impressive performance for Cuttack-A, scoring a century and bagging six wickets for 49 runs respectively in the final match.
Champions Cuttack-A received a cash award of Rs 20,000 and runners-up Rourkela were given Rs 15,000. Asirbad Behera, Hony Secretary, Odisha Cricket Association, graced the prize distribution ceremony as chief guest.
Cuttack-A qualified for the final by taking a first-innings lead of 273 runs against defending champions Bhubaneswar-A in their three-day semifinal, which ended in draw. The other semifinal between Rourkela and Bhubaneswar-B also ended in draw at DRIEMS Stadium in Tangi. But as the first innings of both the sides could not be completed, Rourkela qualified for the final by virtue of haing higher net run rate (1.508 vs 0.971).
In the quarterfinals, Bhubaneswar-A and Rourkela scripted outright wins, defeating Cuttack-B and Jajpur by two wickets and 103 runs respectively. But Cuttack-A and Bhubaneswar-B qualified for the last-four stage by taking first-innings lead in respective quarterfinal contests, which ened in draw against Boudh and East Coast Railway respectively.
Earlier, four teams from Group A (Cuttack-A, East Coast Railway, Bhubaneswar-A and Jajpur), three from Group B (Bhubaneswar-B, Cuttack-B and Rourkela) and one from Group C (Boudh) advanced to the last-eight stage. The 105 matches of the tournament produced two double hundreds, 46 hundreds, 236 fifties and 195 hauls of four or more wickets in an innings. Among outstanding individual performers, Boudh bowler Manoj Kumar Nayak achieved a glorious feat, bagging all 10 wickets in an innings and a total of 15 in their Group C-II league match against Kalahandi.
Bikash Kumar Rout of Dhenkanal also tasted excellent bowling success, scalping nine wickets in an innings and a total of 16 in their Group C-I match against Malkangiri. Bhubaneswar-A bowler Sultan Ahmad achieved the only hat-trick of the tournament in their quarterfinal tie against Cuttack-B. Cuttack-A allrounder Biplab Samantray stood tall among batsmen, hitting one unbeaten double century each in the quarterfinal against Boudh and semifinal against Bhubaneswar-A.
